I made this game under 24 hours


I started this project as a 24 hours challenge. However, I have kept working on it because I want to publish it as an official game.

Concept of the game

The game consists on a  gumball that stick to walls trying to collect stars, in order to unlock new levels.

The idea of a slimy ball sticking to walls just really stuck with me, I felt it would be really cool, and satisfying.

I came up with the idea during the 24 hours, I feel it had to be like that, otherwise it wouldn't be a 24 hours challenge since I consider it to be the most challenging and tricky part. Nevertheless, I came up with it really quickly.

Initially it was gonna be a slime ball, but I then changed it to a gumball thanks to my sister, which also came up with the name: "GumDrop".

Challenges

With the idea settled, everything went pretty smooth, I managed to get the mechanic exactly how I wanted right away, and I was doing a lot of progress really fast. It wasn't until I started working on the jelly effect that things started to get a little tricky. 

Creating soft bodies was a bit harder than I thought. I'm not saying it's hard, but I though unity would have something premade for soft bodies (like for rigidbodies). Instead, I had simulate it by attaching bones to the character, which took me quite a bit to get right. I really liked the result tho.

Another challenge that I faced (considerably harder the the soft bodies) was adding the freaking arrow to the ball (Which I actually didn't do with in the 24 hours). It's not perfect still, I literally copied someone else's code, and is completely seprate from the actual character movement, so it's not as accurate. I'm gonna try to make it the right way, but in the meantime, it still kinda works.

On the other hand, I don't know why the game gets kinda laggy sometimes, I believe it's because of the high quality of some sprites, but I'm not completely sure. I will try decreasing their size without affecting the quality to see if it helps.

Final thoughts

Overall, this has been a very nice experience despite the downfalls! I was very pleased with the result after the 24 hours were up. I will definitely do it again in the future.
